My first overnight call

I thought I should mark this milestone by writing a post. Tonight is my first overnight call ever. I got to the hospital this morning at 5:20 AM and I won't be leaving until tomorrow morning, probably around 9 or 10 AM. So that's a long time. I am on ob/gyn right in Labor and Delivery. Things are going well and I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. It's really amazing being there to help deliver a baby. I'm not saying I want to be an ob but it has opened my eyes a little to being something other than a radiologist. I've especially had my interest piqued in anesthesiology because they do get to see patients and talk to them and be in surgeries, but don't have to deal with clinics or stressful procedures.

Nothing's going on right now but I'm hoping to see some deliveries tonight. I'll have to wait and see.

Dave: It's been fun watching your progress through medical and what I assume at this stage is your residency phase (?), but I had to laugh at how you characterize anesthesiologist. You stated that they don't have to "deal with stressful procedures."

I can't think of anything more stressful than making sure not to over-anesthetize a patient and kill them while they're "under the knife." Still, it was good for a bit of a giggle. (By the way--anesthesiologists pay some of the highest insurance premiums in the medical profession.)

I hope you made it through okay. It's an excellent time to learn that babies, in fact, are VERY slippery and that they come out looking a bit purple.

(lol, and if you read my blog, you know how my meetings with anesthesia went.)

I didn't like the OB part of OB/GYN much. I delivered 2 babies and simply opted out of it hence. Out of respect to the expectant mothers, i didn't want to do it because I was not fully invested in it.

So, I opted for the Gyn surgeries. Some of the finest surgeries ever. Completed about 60 cases as 1st/2nd assistant and closed on several occasions. Babies are cute, I just didn't like delivering them...I felt numb and uninterested. Someone said it was because I was single and didn't have a baby of mine. Oh well, too bad.
